Zimbabwe A v Bangladesh A, 3rd Test, Bulawayo, 3rd day Bangladesh battle to avoid defeat July 2, 2006
Bangladesh 150 (Maruma 4-49) and 216 for 5 (Kapali 74*) lead Zimbabwe A 353 by 13 runs Alok Kapali scored an unbeaten half century to ensure to give Bangladesh A a slender lead after they were forced to follow-on on the third day of their four-day match against Zimbabwe A at Queens Sports Club. Kapali struck three sixes off the home captain Stuart Matsikenyeri to finish with 74 not out from 86 balls at the close of play on the third day as Bangladesh closed on 216 for 5, a lead of 13 runs after being bowled out for 150 in their first innings. Bangladesh resumed on115 for 7, still needing to score 204 runs to avoid the follow-on. Christopher Mpofu struck with the fifth ball of his second over of the morning when he had Saghir Hossain taken at second slip by Keegan Meth for 21. Trevor Garwe was introduced into the attack for Mpofu and with the last ball of his first over of the day trapped Taposh Baishya leg-before wicket for 8. Maruma ended the Bangladesh A first innings when he had Enamul Haque caught by Stuart Matsikenyeri. Maruma finished with 4 for 49, Garwe picked up two wickets while Mpofu and Matsikenyeri had one wicket apiece. In their second innings, Bangladesh were in trouble as early as the first over when Mehrab Hossain nicked Mpofu to wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Mufambisi for a two-ball duck. Hossain's opening partner - Nazmus Sadat - followed when he fell to Matsikenyeri, given out leg-before for 24. Tushar Imran took one six off Mpofu on his way to 31 before he became the third lbw victim, again to Matsikenyeri. Kapali and Shakib Al Hassan put on 50 runs for the fourth wicket, which ended when Al Hassan became young pace bowler Admire Manyumwa's first wicket in first-class cricket, brilliantly taken by Timycen Maruma at first slip for 42 runs. Mpofu claimed his second wicket when he induced Mahmud Ullah Riyad to drive to mid off where Kasteni took the catch. The tourists' hopes now lie in the hands of Kapali to give them a competitive lead on the last day of the match. Should Kapali continue with his exploits and should he get support from the rest of the remaining batsmen, then Bangladesh might escape with the draw they need to take the series © Cricinfo
