Chigumbura angry at classification

Zimbabwe board doubles number of central contracts

Tawanda Jonas

September 6, 2007

Zimbabwe Cricket has doubled the number players on central contracts following the financial boost resulting from the World Cup, while the board is set to receive another windfall for participation at this month's inaugural ICC World Twenty20. ZC had 10 players on central contracts for the year ending on August 31, 2007.

The issuing of contracts to the players has, however, not been painless and one senior player, Elton Chigumbura, who had been placed in the B category, angrily demanded a better deal on August 30, the day he was offered the contract document.

Chigumbura, Zimbabwe's best allrounder at the moment, has been promised a review of the terms of his contract amid fear that disgruntlement among the players could trigger yet another rebellion in the wake of recent disputes over pay.

The central contracts, which determine the players' salaries and perks, are split into four categories, with the top grade - which was only offered national team captain Prosper Utseya - being A+. The second highest, which has three players is Grade A, while Grade B has eight players, with six players in Grade C.

Below is the full list of the contracted players and their classes.

A+: Prosper Utseya

A: Tatenda Taibu, Gary Brent, Vusimuzi Sibanda.

B: Edward Rainsford, Hamilton Masakadza, Terrence Duffin, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Sean Williams, Tawanda Mupariwa, Elton Chigumbura, Christopher Mpofu.

C: Brendan Taylor, Chamu Chibhabha, Keith Dabengwa, Tino Mawoyo, Graeme Cremer, Timycen Maruma.

Very surprised to see Utseya in the A+ class when Taibu and Brent are A, aslo Taylor in C class and Chigumbura is the B class ? doesn't make sense to me and i've been following Zimbabwe Cricket for awhile now, surely Taylor and Chigumbura should be moved up.

Isnt Tatenda Taibu the best player at the moment in Zimbabwe? Why didnt they classified him as an a+ player?Elton Chigumbura is right he is one of the most consistent players in the team.He too should be considered an a+ player.Who are the people that are making these descisions?are they in thier right frame of mind?ask them to think again and do better in order for the minds of the players to focus properly.

utseya does not deserve an A+ contract considering his mediocre performance of late. Vusi and Elton deserve better, they made the African xi for crying out loud. Taibu came back with a bang, an A+ contract, he rightly deserves.

Why was Brendan Taylor not offered an "A" contract? He's certainly been a big part of the limited success that Zimbabwe has had and it seems strange that Gary Brent would be considered more valuable by the board.

Question: How on earth does Utseya get an A+ and Taibu just an A? Utseyas performances are ordinary his batting is very poor, I do understand as the captain he should be paid a little more, but going on performances and results he is very average. Chigumbura has a right to be unhappy, after all he is one of the more consistant players and should be in the A contract list at least, After all he was good enough to merit an ODI place in the full African team that played in the Afro/Asia series recently, doesnt make sense?.

it is good for the young and upcoming players to at least have a fighting chance and see it a close reality that they can play for Zimbabwe. I support the move by Zimbabwe Cricket to increase the number of contracts issued, as youngsters will have a hope and a chance. personally i have a dream of wanting to open for Zimbabwe with the bat, alongside Hollywood Vus(Vusi Sibanda) some day, and to me the increase is much appreciated and a fighting chance for some batsman like me. Thank you ZC
