Graeme Wright succeeded John Woodcock, who stood down to become associate editor, and he immediately faced the same problems of cramming in the ever-increasing programme of cricket. His first set of Notes followed a depressing theme for English cricket with reasons being sought for the poor standards. Gubby Allen, the former England player, received a special portrait for his knighthood that year. Vic Marks, the England and Somerset offspinner, made his Almanack debut, with "Time present and time past", illustrating how much the modern player is now under the media spotlight. Meanwhile, Jim Laker, who took 193 Test wickets for England, died at the age of 64, the day before his old Test team-mate Bill Edrich.
