Short-pitched bowling was foremost in the editor's mind as he wrote on the "Menace of Short Pitched Bouncers". Counties faced severe financial difficulties - Middlesex asked all 7000 members for £10 each to avoid imminent bankruptcy. The retirement of Garry Sobers - who was knighted in the New Year - elicited a lengthy and glowing tribute.
