Yorkshire v Kent, Scarborough, 4th day Younis double brightens final day July 28, 2007
Kent 486 and 17 for 0 drew with Yorkshire 550 for 9 dec (Younis 217, McGrath 120, Bresnan 58) The draw between Yorkshire and Kent was almost inevitable but the final day was enlivened by Younis Khan, who struck his second double-century of the season. Kent were no doubt hoping that the first hour would belong to the bowlers, as it had on each of the first three days, but they were to be disappointed. Simon Cook began with a no-ball, and then Younis hit his next two deliveries for four to set the stage for what was to come. He soon reached his fifty, which took 66 deliveries, and the bowlers were unable to impress. The second new ball resulted in a minor hiccup, with Ryan McLaren immediately dismissing Anthony McGrath, who had moved steadily to 120, caught at the wicket by Geraint Jones while trying too late to withdraw his bat from a testing ball just outside his off stump. Jacques Rudolph was then caught in the slips off McLaren third ball, but Younis was immovable. He reached his century (131 balls) shortly before lunch, and his double (245 balls) after tea. His favourite strokes were the cover drive and the drives and clips through the leg-side field, mainly wide of mid-on. His best support came from Gerard Brophy (43) and Tim Bresnan (58). McLaren was the most impressive Kent bowler, with 4 for 89, but they were handicapped by the withdrawal of Andrew Hall with a strain. In its latter stages Younis's innings was aided by some easy bowling, once the bonus points situation had been settled (eight to Yorkshire and seven to Kent), including the fearsome off-breaks of the captain Robert Key himself, as Kent seemed to lose interest. It is not in Darren Gough's competitive nature to shrug his shoulders, though. He let Younis reach 200, with the last man Jason Gillespie as his partner, and then declared at 550 for nine, a lead of 64. Younis's innings statistics were 217 runs off 252 balls, with six sixes and 18 fours. Then Gough came tearing in with the new ball, convinced he had Joe Denly caught at the wicket second ball, only for the umpire to disagree. Adil Rashid opened the bowling at the far end, and soon Mark Lawson replaced Gough. But Kent batted out ten overs for 17 runs without loss before the draw was agreed. © Cricinfo
