Hampshire honour cricketing legend, Derek Shackleton

Vic Isaacs

April 14, 2004

Hampshire Cricket played tribute to one of it's greatest players by renaming the Members Bar, the Derek Shackleton Members Bar.

Alongside many of his contemporaries, Derek Shackleton also accompanied by his wife and son, pulled the cord to open the plaque that will remain above the bar area.

Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie captain of Hampshire when they won the County Championship in 1961, paid tribute to Derek. "He was the most reliable of bowlers" said the President. "I could put him on to bowl first thing in the morning and he would still be beating the bat, long into the afternoon. A man who could and should have played far more matches for England than he did".

Later in the season, similar tributes will be paid to Arthur Holt and Robin Smith. The chairman of the Members Committee Roger Treherne invited members to make suggestions. "The Rose Bowl is a large expanse" so there is room for more".
