One of New Zealand's leading umpires, Doug Cowie officiated at first-class level for more than two decades, and on the international stage for ten years during which time he stood in 22 Tests and 71 ODIs, including matches at the 1999 World Cup in England, and more than 100 first-class games. He announced his retirement in 2005, commenting that "the satisfaction gained from the challenges of umpiring no longer outweigh the sacrifices necessary to perform on the field." He was subsequently appointed as the ICC's Umpires and Referees Manager. Cricinfo staff
