Jim Troughton's emergence was a gift to punsters and headline-writers across the country. When he was called into England's one-day squad for the 2003 NatWest Series against South Africa and Zimbabwe rarely a day went by without reference to his grandfather, Patrick, who starred as Dr Who on BBC Television in the 1960s. However, he struggled during the tournament although his fielding was one of the keys in England winning the trophy. After heading back to county cricket he failed to hit the big scores required to keep his name in the frame and drifted into the background. His chances of a recall are now extremely slim. Recently he has struggled to get a game in Warwickshire's Championship team, although he remains a key component of their one-day outfit.
