 Profile

Marcus North has ridden an outstanding form streak over the past four seasons but has not been able to force his way into the national set-up. A casual attitude afflicted him in his initial seasons as he made the transition from decorated youth player to senior squad member, but since 2003-04 he has been one of Western Australia's most consistent. He celebrated that season of 984 runs in the Pura Cup with a century against Zimbabwe for Australia A, and followed up with nine fifties in the first-class competition for 826 runs, which he placed alongside 412 in the ING Cup. Before 2005-06 he was appointed a deputy vice-captain and the extra responsibility helped guide him to a return of 712 at 50.05, including twin centuries against South Australia and an unbeaten 151 against New South Wales. Last summer he led the side on several occasions, collecting 680 Pura Cup runs at 42.50 and showing his aggression with a blistering 115 from 85 balls in a one-day game against Tasmania. It was no surprise when, after Justin Langer quit the captaincy, North was handed the reins full-time for 2007-08.

A well-organised left hander, he had significant success at under-age level, having been a member of several Academy and national junior sides and an elite scholar in 1998. He is particularly well remembered for a remarkable double of 200 and 134 at Sheikhupura during an Australian Youth team's tour of Pakistan in early 1997. His debut at first-class level came in 1998-99 on an Academy tour of Zimbabwe, and he quickly showcased his potential upon his elevation to senior interstate ranks the following season, hitting a brave 60 to help his team to a tense win over South Australia. He times the ball exquisitely, is an accurate albeit under-utilised offspiner, and has lightning reflexes in the field.
