Amjad Khan, Kent's quick bowler, can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel as he gets closer to a comeback following the knee surgery which kept him out for the entire 2007 season.
Khan, who was born Denmark, was forcing his way into England reckoning, after completing his qualification period, when he was forced to pull out of the England A tour of Bangladesh last February having picked up the injury at a bowling clinic in Chennai. Initially the problem wasn't thought to be too serious, but after Khan returned home it was discovered he needed an operation on his cruciate ligament.
Now, though, Khan can start to consider his return to action after a recovery process which has involved time at the ECB Academy in Loughborough and stints in India.
"It's been a busy schedule with lots of long journeys on planes and hauling up and down the motorway to Loughborough but it's got to be done," Khan told the Kentish Gazette. "India is a nice place to be in terms of cricket and it is good to feel the sun on your back, you can't beat getting outside to train in the heat rather than battling on in the cold in England.
"In terms of fitness I seem to be about 80 to 90 per cent there now. I bowled five, six or eight overs every day when in India. Now it's about getting into competition mode and getting miles of work back into the legs so that I'm 100 per cent ready for my first game.
However, having spent so long on the sidelines Khan is not going to rush the final stages of his recovery. "I don't dare give myself a comeback date," he added. "Pre-season training will be the key to everything."
