Profile
George Bailey is rated so highly by Tasmania that when Daniel Marsh tore his calf late last season, Bailey was handed the captaincy. It was a gamble - Bailey was 24 and had only established himself in the side the previous year. It was also crunch time in the Tigers' Pura Cup campaign as they pushed for a place in the decider. Bailey, who captains his club side, South Hobart-Sandy Bay, led Tasmania in two important wins - he oversaw the routing of New South Wales for 53 - before handing the reins back to Marsh for the final triumph. With the bat, Bailey was a contributor rather than a star in 2006-07, scoring 626 at 36.82 and adding 209 FR Cup runs. His personal highlight arguably came shortly before the season started, when he bludgeoned 136 from 65 balls for the Academy against a Zimbabwe Board XI. A season earlier, another Marsh injury gave Bailey an extended stint in the first-class line-up. His 778 Pura Cup runs earned him a second invitation to the Academy and expanded his reputation from an attacking one-day player into a well-rounded batsman. Talk of the state leadership and possible national team representation began that summer, when his highest score was 155 against South Australia, an innings that formed part of a state-record fourth-wicket partnership of 292 with Travis Birt. A powerful striker, Bailey is a former national under-19 player, and the great-great-grandson of George Herbert Bailey, who was part of the 1878 touring squad to England. Cricinfo staff July 2007
