A tall allrounder who combines right-arm fast-medium bowling with strong lower-order batting, John Hastings made a solid start to his state career in 2007-08. His first one-day games brought limited batting opportunities but he impressed with the ball, taking three wickets in six deliveries on debut when he was asked to bowl at the death against Queensland. However, his first-class debut, against the touring Indians, was ruined by rain and any chances of more action in the short-term ended in January when he had surgery to have a pin inserted in a fractured finger. His first two names invited people to call him the Duke and New South Wales watched him ride into the Victorian sunset at the end of 2006-07 as he could not find a way into the Blues line-up. Hastings represented New South Wales in under-age and Second XI teams but like another Sydney allrounder, Jon Moss, who he effectively replaced in Victoria's plans, he decided a move south would bring more opportunities.
